What Are Assessment Objectives (AOs)?

AO stands for Assessment Objective. Think of AOs as the different “skills” Cambridge tests you on in every single question. When an examiner marks your paper, they don't just give you a mark out of 12 based on how “good” your answer feels — they allocate specific marks to each AO separately.

Breathing = physical process of moving air in and out of the lungs (ventilation). Respiration = chemical process that RELEASES energy from glucose in cells. Aerobic respiration: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy. Respiration happens in ALL living cells, not just the lungs.

'Describe' = state what happens using data (quote both axes with units). 'Explain' = give the biological REASON why. If asked to describe a trend, quote figures. If asked to explain, you must state the mechanism or cause — e.g. 'the rate increases because more substrate molecules collide with enzyme active sites per unit time'.
