About

About Qualifications Scotland (SQA) Past Papers

Qualifications Scotland (formerly the Scottish Qualifications Authority / SQA) is Scotland's national body for qualifications. Unlike England — where students choose between AQA, OCR, Edexcel, and other boards — Qualifications Scotland is the only exam board in Scotland. Every secondary school in Scotland uses Qualifications Scotland qualifications, making these past papers essential for all Scottish students.

PapersDaddy provides free Qualifications Scotland past papers from 2020–2025, including question papers (QP) and marking instructions (MI). Qualifications Scotland qualifications are graded A to D at all levels, where A is the highest grade and D is the lowest passing grade. Students who do not meet the standard receive "No Award".

Qualifications Scotland exams are held in May and June each year, with results released in August. The three main levels are: National 5 (equivalent to GCSE, taken in S4), Higher (the main university entry qualification, taken in S5/S6), and Advanced Higher (equivalent to A Level, taken in S6 for competitive university courses).

Qualifications Scotland offers unique subjects not found in other UK exam boards, including Gaelic, Care, Childcare and Development, Applications of Mathematics, Modern Studies, and Practical Woodworking. These reflect Scotland's distinct educational tradition and curriculum for excellence.

Using past papers is the most effective revision strategy. Students who regularly practise with Qualifications Scotland past papers under timed conditions become familiar with the exam format, question styles, and mark allocation. The marking instructions show exactly how each mark is awarded — use them to self-assess after every practice paper.

FAQs

Questions, answered.

Qualifications Scotland (formerly the Scottish Qualifications Authority / SQA) is Scotland's national qualifications body, responsible for developing, assessing, and certificating qualifications. Qualifications Scotland is the only exam board operating in Scotland — every secondary school in the country uses its qualifications. These include National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher.

PapersDaddy provides the complete Qualifications Scotland archive across 143 subjects, covering National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher from 2020–2025. This includes question papers and marking instructions — all free to download as PDF.

All Qualifications Scotland qualifications (National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher) use the same grading scale: A, B, C, and D — where A is the highest grade and D is the lowest passing grade. Students who do not meet the required standard receive 'No Award'. There are no numeric grades and no tiered papers — all students sit the same exam.

National 5 is taken in S4 (age 15-16) and is equivalent to GCSE in England. Higher is taken in S5/S6 and is the main university entry requirement — broadly equivalent to AS Level. Advanced Higher is taken in S6 and is equivalent to A Level — required for competitive university courses like Medicine or Oxbridge entry.

Qualifications Scotland exams are held in May and June each year. The exam diet typically runs from late April to early June. Results are released in August. Unlike England, there are no November resit sessions — students who want to improve their grade must wait until the following May/June.

Marking instructions (MI) are Qualifications Scotland's equivalent of mark schemes used by English exam boards. They detail exactly how each mark is awarded, including acceptable answers, common errors, and alternative approaches. Files prefixed with 'mi_' in the filename are marking instructions.
