About Qualifications Scotland (SQA) National 5
Qualifications Scotland (formerly SQA) National 5 is Scotland's main qualification for S4 students (aged 15-16), equivalent to GCSE in England. National 5 replaced Standard Grade and Intermediate 2 qualifications as part of Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence reform. It is the first level of Qualifications Scotland qualifications that contributes to university admission.
Unlike GCSE, National 5 has no Foundation/Higher tiers — all students sit the same exam and can achieve grades A to D. The grading scale is A (highest), B, C, D (lowest pass), with "No Award" for students who do not meet the required standard. Most National 5 courses include both an exam component and coursework or assignment component.
Qualifications Scotland National 5 exams are held in May and June each year, with results released in August. Students typically take 7-8 National 5 subjects in S4, with the core subjects being English, Mathematics, and often a science and a social subject. National 5 passes are a prerequisite for progressing to Higher.
