About Qualifications Scotland (SQA) Higher
Qualifications Scotland (formerly SQA) Higher is Scotland's main university entry qualification, taken by students in S5 or S6 (age 16-18). Higher is broadly equivalent to AS Level in England, though Scottish universities accept Highers as the primary entry qualification. Five Highers at grade A-C is a common university entry requirement.
Higher replaced the old Higher Grade qualification and is graded A to D, with A being the highest. All students sit the same papers — there are no tiered exams. Most Higher courses include both a written exam and a coursework or assignment element. The exam typically accounts for the majority of the overall grade.
Students usually take 5 Highers in S5, often dropping to 3-4 subjects. Some students also take additional Highers in S6 to improve their university application. Higher results are used by UCAS for university applications throughout the UK, with Scottish universities placing particular emphasis on Higher grades.
