Analysis versus description in Question Paper 1 essays

Across all three years, markers noted that many candidates produced descriptive accounts rather than analytical ones. In World Issues questions, candidates described the causes or impacts without analysing their relative significance. In Democracy questions, detailed knowledge of mechanisms was present but the evaluative weighing of their effectiveness was absent. Analysis requires explaining why a factor matters and how it compares to other factors — description alone does not earn the higher marks.

Sustained argument across the full 20-mark essay

Candidates frequently began 20-mark essays with a clear argument but drifted into factual description by the middle paragraphs. The requirement to sustain a position throughout — weighing each factor against the central extent claim — distinguishes Higher from National 5. Markers noted that responses often contained good knowledge but lacked the thread of argument needed for the top mark band.

Source provenance reasoning in reliability answers

Candidates regularly stated that a source was 'biased' or 'old' without explaining the consequence for the specific information in the source. Stating 'newspapers are biased' without identifying the paper's specific political stance, named audience, and the resulting one-sidedness on the particular topic was insufficient at Higher level. Similarly, the date only undermines reliability if the candidate explains what has changed in the intervening period.

Question Paper 2 — Source Reliability

'Analyse the validity' / objectivity overall judgement with correct quantitative extent

The 2-mark overall judgement for the objectivity question was consistently the lowest-scoring element. Many candidates made no overall judgement at all; others produced absolute statements ('completely accurate') that earned zero. Vague phrases ('partly', 'to an extent') earned only partial marks. Only a small minority used precise extent language ('to a large extent', 'largely', 'mostly') supported immediately by source evidence.

Question Paper 2 — Source Objectivity

Currency of case-study examples — avoiding dated or irrelevant evidence

Markers noted very old examples in all three years: outdated Scottish data in social inequality, dated US Presidential examples in World Powers, and stale statistics in World Issues. Candidates who relied on examples more than three to four years old were penalised for irrelevance or inaccuracy. The 2025 report highlighted that dated examples were especially problematic in questions on governing Scotland options and voting behaviour factors.

Balanced, relative conclusions that answer the 'to what extent' framing directly

Conclusions that merely restated the essay content rather than delivering a relative verdict were repeatedly flagged. A conclusion must weigh the factors examined and state which is most significant and why — this is the judgement that earns the evaluation marks. Writing 'In conclusion, I have discussed X, Y and Z' without a comparative verdict does not qualify as evaluation at Higher level.

Theory integration in Social Issues essays — sociological and criminological frameworks

In Crime and the Law questions, candidates who were unable to reference criminological theories (Merton's strain theory, Durkheim's anomie, broken windows theory, social learning theory) were limited to descriptive knowledge. Markers noted in 2024 and 2025 that theory-based analysis accessed the higher mark range; many candidates described crime factors without connecting them to any theoretical framework.

Assignment decision / recommendation — rejecting alternatives with evidence

Markers noted that many candidates gave evidence to support their preferred recommendation but failed to provide evidence and reasons for rejecting the alternative options. Candidates who only argued in favour of their choice could achieve at most 2 of the 4 marks available for the decision. Offering a one-sided recommendation without explicitly evaluating the alternatives forfeits the comparative decision marks.
