What Are Assessment Objectives (AOs)?

Before we dive in, you need to understand how Cambridge actually marks your answers.

AO stands for Assessment Objective. Think of AOs as the different “skills” Cambridge tests you on in every single question. When an examiner marks your paper, they don't just give you a mark out of 12 based on how “good” your answer feels — they allocate specific marks to each AO separately.

For example, a 12-mark question might be split as: AO1 (2 marks) + AO2 (2 marks) + AO3 (2 marks) + AO4 (6 marks). If you write a perfect textbook answer but don't evaluate, you can only score 6 out of 12 — because the other 6 marks are specifically reserved for evaluation.

Never write 'wood', 'plastic', 'metal' or 'easy to work with' — those are zero-mark phrases. Match the material to what your design actually needs to do.

Part (e) is a manufacturing drawing, not a redraw. Show: (1) construction methods (joints, fastenings, how parts assemble), (2) important dimensions in mm, (3) finishes, (4) ideally an exploded or orthographic view. Pretend a skilled craftsperson must build it from your drawing alone — if they can't, you have not earned the marks.

Read the question stem to identify the materials category. If the brief says 'lightweight graphic materials' use foamboard, corrugated card or Corriflute — NOT wood or acrylic. Memorise specific tool names by material: hole saw / Forstner bit (Ø80 holes in wood), scriber (marking metal), centre punch (indenting metal before drilling), odd-leg calipers (parallel lines on metal), hand/flat/half-round file (smoothing metal/acrylic edges), emery cloth or wet-and-dry (silicon carbide) paper for metal/acrylic, glasspaper for wood only. Generic names earn zero.

Every evaluation point needs a positive/negative judgement linked to a specific feature. 'The wide base improves stability because the centre of gravity stays inside the footprint' beats 'it is stable'. 'The Velcro strap allows quick removal but may lose grip after repeated use' beats 'it works well'. Tie each comment to function, materials, user or environment.

Paper 4 — Calculation questions (moments, gear ratio, MA, strain, astable timing)

  • Always show all working — part-marks are awarded even when the final answer is wrong

No — you sit ONE specialist paper only, the option your centre has prepared you for. The June 2025 examiner reports cover all three specialist routes (0445/31, 0445/42, 0445/51) and confirm Paper 4/41 had too few candidates for a meaningful report, so Systems & Control entries are typically smaller.

What is the most common reason candidates lose marks on Paper 1?

Treating the seven sub-questions as separate tasks instead of as one product. The examiner report flags this directly: 'In some responses the part questions appeared to be unconnected.
