State the overall trend → describe what happens on the y-axis as the x-axis increases → identify any turning points or levelling off → quote specific data values from both axes with units

  • For 'compare' questions: use explicit comparative words — 'greater than', 'faster', 'lower' — not just 'different'

Use the allele letters specified in the question. Show parental genotypes, write gametes along the top row and left column, fill all four boxes, then state offspring genotypes AND phenotypes. For sex-linked traits, use X-linked notation and never place alleles on the Y chromosome.

Common error: Using different allele letters from those in the question. In sex-linkage, writing female gametes as X and Y (females are XX — their gametes are all X). Completing the grid correctly but then not converting genotypes to phenotypes.

Graphs — bar charts and line graphs (Unit 3)

Axes: Independent variable with units × Dependent variable with units

Label both axes with variable name and unit. For line graphs: plot points accurately and join them with a ruled straight line or smooth curve as appropriate. For bar charts: bars must be accurately plotted, symmetrical, and drawn with a ruler. Use the scale provided — do not change given start/end values.

Common error: Units omitted from axes or placed in the body of the table instead of column headings. Bars of unequal width or inaccurately plotted. For line graphs, joining points with freehand curves instead of a ruler where a straight line is expected.

Cell drawings from microscope photographs (Unit 3)

Draw the cell you can SEE in the photograph, not a textbook diagram. Use continuous, neat lines — not sketchy or broken strokes. Include only the organelles visible in the image. Labelling lines must touch the organelle.

Common error: Drawing a textbook plant cell with organelles not visible in the photograph. Sketchy or broken lines. Labelling lines that do not make contact with the structure. Nucleus drawn in the wrong position relative to the photograph.

Food chains and food webs (Unit 1)

Arrows always point FROM the organism being eaten TO the organism doing the eating (direction of energy flow). Start chains with the producer. Include arrows on every link — a chain without arrows cannot earn marks.

Common error: Omitting arrows entirely or reversing them to point from consumer to prey. Stating the Sun or light as the start of a food chain instead of the producer (green plant). Misreading the food web when asked about consequences of removing one species.
