What Are Assessment Objectives (AOs)?

Before we dive in, you need to understand how CCEA actually marks your answers.

AO stands for Assessment Objective. Think of AOs as the different “skills” CCEA tests you on in every single question. When an examiner marks your paper, they don't just give you a mark out of 12 based on how “good” your answer feels — they allocate specific marks to each AO separately.

For example, a 12-mark question might be split as: AO1 (2 marks) + AO2 (2 marks) + AO3 (2 marks) + AO4 (6 marks). If you write a perfect textbook answer but don't evaluate, you can only score 6 out of 12 — because the other 6 marks are specifically reserved for evaluation.

Also note: graphite is described as 'a good conductor of electricity' — omitting 'of electricity' is insufficient for the mark.

Show the formula, substitute values with correct units, carry out the arithmetic, and give the answer with correct units and to the required number of decimal places or significant figures.

Using an incorrect formula (Physics: zero marks for entire calculation). Failing to convert units before substituting (g to kg, kW to W, min to s). Not giving the answer to the specified number of decimal places.

Adjust the coefficients in front of each formula so that the number of atoms of each element is equal on both sides of the equation. Never change subscripts within a formula to balance.

Changing the subscripts within a formula (e.g. writing CaO2 instead of 2CaO). Failing to notice that the balanced equation mark is dependent on all formula marks being correct first — if any formula is wrong, the balancing mark cannot be accessed.

Common mistake

Giving a description instead of a name, or naming the wrong substance (e.g. iodine instead of iodide ion, or ureter instead of urethra). Check the question word: 'identify' requires the precise name, not a description of its properties.

suggest1–2 marks

Apply your knowledge to an unfamiliar context to give a scientifically reasonable answer. The question accepts a range of valid responses, not a single fixed answer.

Common mistake

Giving a generic textbook answer that ignores the specific scenario. In Biology, suggesting reasons that could apply to any organism rather than the specific one described in the question. In Chemistry, giving a response that contradicts information given in the stem.

compare2–3 marks

State both a similarity and a difference, or rank all items if more than two are given. Use comparative or superlative language depending on the number of items.

Common mistake

Giving two versions of the same point (e.g. 'A is faster' and 'B is slower') — these are one point and earn one mark. When comparing three sets of data, using 'higher' instead of 'highest' loses the comparison mark entirely.

Give a concise factual answer, usually one or two sentences. No explanation is required.

Common mistake

Writing too much and including an incorrect statement alongside a correct one — the list rule means the incorrect statement cancels the correct one. For one-mark 'state' questions, give exactly one answer.

Draw only the features relevant to the specific cell type asked for. For a root hair cell: elongated extension, no chloroplasts, large vacuole, cell wall and membrane. For a bacterial cell with plasmid: circular chromosome, circular plasmid separate from chromosome, no nucleus, cell wall. Use a sharp pencil with continuous, unbroken lines.

Common error: Drawing chloroplasts in a root hair cell (they are absent — root cells do not photosynthesise). Drawing the plasmid as part of the main chromosome rather than a separate circular DNA molecule. Standard of cell drawings is consistently described as poor across all three years; practice is essential.

Ray diagrams — reflection, refraction, and lenses (Physics Unit 2)

For refraction: draw the normal (dashed line perpendicular to the surface) at the boundary, show the incident and refracted rays on opposite sides of the normal. For converging lens: use the standard rules — ray parallel to the axis refracts through the focal point; ray through the optical centre travels straight. Arrows on all rays are required.

Common error: Showing reflection at a refraction boundary or vice versa. Failing to draw the normal. Placing the image in the wrong position for converging lenses. Omitting arrows from rays. Rays not drawn accurately enough to show the image at the correct position.

Graph curves for rates of reaction (Chemistry Unit 2)

Axes: Time × Mass of reactants lost or volume of gas produced

The curve must start at the same point as the original graph, curve steeply then level off, end at the same final value. For a higher temperature or higher concentration: the curve must go below the original (steeper gradient) and finish at the same endpoint. For a lower temperature: curve is shallower and takes longer to reach the same endpoint.

Common error: Drawing two separate lines instead of one curve. Not starting the new curve at the same starting point as the original. Ending the curve at a different level (different total amount of product). Drawing a curve that goes above the original when asked to show faster conditions — curves show rate, not the endpoint.

Apparatus diagrams for laboratory preparations (Chemistry Units 1 and 2)

Draw in 2D, not 3D. Use correct laboratory symbols: conical flask (not a round flask unless specified), thistle funnel (not thistle tube), delivery tube, gas jar or collection vessel. Label all components. Tripods should have three legs. Show connections between apparatus clearly.

Common error: Drawing 3D representations that are not accepted. Giving apparatus the wrong name (e.g. 'thistle tube' instead of 'thistle funnel', 'test tube' instead of 'conical flask'). Tripods drawn with four legs. Omitting essential labels. Candidates consistently lose marks on apparatus diagrams across all three years.

Practical Unit 7 — line graphs and scales

Axes: Independent variable (with correct unit, e.g. concentration of sucrose solution %) × Dependent variable (with correct unit, e.g. change in mass / g)

Choose a scale that uses more than half the grid. Label both axes with the variable name AND the unit. Plot each data point accurately. For Unit 7 Biology, draw straight lines between consecutive points (do not draw a curve of best fit). Record the sign (+ or -) on calculated change-in-mass values.

Common error: Choosing an inappropriate scale that compresses all data into a small area. Omitting the unit from the axis label. Missing the '+' or '-' sign on change-in-mass values. Applying BODMAS incorrectly when calculating averages (A + B/2 gives the wrong answer — it must be (A + B)/2).
