AO stands for Assessment Objective. Think of AOs as the different “skills” CCEA tests you on in every single question. When an examiner marks your paper, they don't just give you a mark out of 12 based on how “good” your answer feels — they allocate specific marks to each AO separately.

Restating what happens without giving any reason. In Unit 3, writing a second description of the graph instead of bringing in geographical theory. For river processes, stating 'erosion occurs' without specifying the type (hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition, solution) and its specific effect.

Assess the positives and negatives of each method or strategy, then make a final overall judgement. Every evaluate answer has three required elements: advantages, disadvantages, and a concluding verdict. For management strategies, evaluate the sustainability of each method.

Giving only advantages, or listing lots of methods without weighing them up. Confining sustainability to a single final sentence rather than threading it through the whole answer. Not including a concluding judgement — without this, Level 3 is not accessible. Candidates who evaluate only one method in a strategy are capped at Level 2.

Apply your geographical knowledge to an unfamiliar or partly given situation. Your answer must be geographically plausible and relevant to the specific resource or context given in the question.

Giving a generic textbook answer that ignores the specific scenario. Not reading the resource carefully before suggesting — in many cases the answer is guided by information already in the question.

Use the data given to perform a numerical calculation. Show your working, state the formula or method, substitute values, and give the answer with correct units.

Not showing working so no method marks can be awarded if the answer is wrong. Failing to use the data provided in the resource. In map distance questions, not using a ruler and scale bar together, leading to inaccurate measurement.

Identify both similarities and differences between the two things. Use comparative language: 'higher than', 'smaller than', 'whereas'. For population pyramid questions, refer to specific age groups or cohorts and quote figures for Level 3.

In population pyramid questions, only describing shape without quoting figures for different age groups — this restricts marks to Level 1. Stating opposite arguments of the same point as two separate points (e.g. 'A is wider' and 'B is narrower' — these are the same observation and earn only one mark).

Weigh up the importance, success, or value of something, considering evidence on both sides. Similar to evaluate but often focused on judging 'how well' something worked or 'how significant' a factor is. A final overall judgement is required.

Common mistake

Listing facts about the topic without making any judgement about their relative importance. Not referring to specific facts and figures when assessing how well a case study strategy worked. Omitting the final assessment statement.

OS Map skills — distance, direction, area, grid references (Unit 1 and Unit 2)

Use a ruler and the printed scale bar for distance — never estimate. For direction, identify north on the map and name the compass bearing between the two stated points. For area, count full grid squares then estimate partial squares (one grid square = 1 km²). For grid references, give six figures: three for easting (column), three for northing (row). Always read the map key before identifying symbols.

Common error: Stating the reverse compass direction (NW instead of SE) — the most frequent map error across all three years. Stating 13 wind turbines when there are 14 (miscounting by one). Confusing a caravan site symbol for a campsite symbol. Ignoring the instruction to 'use map evidence' and writing a general answer.

Fieldwork line graph or bar chart (Unit 3)

Axes: Independent variable — distance from source (km) for continuous data; site number for discrete data × Dependent variable (e.g. width in metres, depth in cm, bedload size in mm)

Use a line graph only for continuous data (distance in km on x-axis). Use a bar chart for discrete data (site numbers on x-axis). Label both axes with variable name AND unit in brackets. Write a title that names both axes and the type of graph. Scales must start at zero unless an axis break is drawn. Use a ruler for all lines and bars. Plot all data points accurately — minimum five sites required. Do not use a rubber; cross out errors instead.

Common error: Drawing a line graph when site numbers (discrete data) are on the x-axis. Missing unit labels on axes — losing the axis mark. Squashing the graph into one corner instead of using the full graph paper. Mixing up which variable goes on which axis. Including a best-fit line on a scatter graph that is badly drawn and inaccurate.

Precipitation is shown as bars; temperature as a line graph. When describing, name each season and quote specific values from each axis. The bar for any missing month must be fully shaded and the correct height — partial shading loses the mark. Describe trends by naming at least three seasons and quoting figures.

Common error: Not using a ruler when drawing the missing bar, resulting in an inaccurate or slanted bar. Using stripy shading that does not fully fill the bar. Failing to quote seasonal figures when describing the graph — earning only Level 1. Confusing which scale (left or right) belongs to precipitation versus temperature.

Population pyramid (Unit 2, Theme A)

Axes: Population (%) — males on left, females on right × Age cohorts (5-year groups from 0-4 at base upward)

When adding a bar, fully shade the entire bar at the correct length using a ruler — do not leave unshaded sections. Bars must be the same width as all other bars. When comparing two pyramids, refer to specific age groups and quote percentages for Level 3. Do not explain differences unless the question asks you to — a 'describe/compare' question rewards observations with figures only.

Common error: Incomplete or stripy bar shading — a mark lost even if the length is correct. Describing the shape without quoting any age group figures, restricting the answer to Level 1. Explaining demographic differences when only a description was asked for — these explanation points earn no marks.

Choropleth / density map (Unit 2, Theme C)

Read the key carefully before describing distribution. Quote specific countries or regions at each shade level. When describing pattern, use directional language (north/south, east/west) and name specific countries. Use the correct map type term — examiners noted in 2024 that candidates confused 'choropleth' with 'synoptic' or were unfamiliar with the term 'density map'.

Common error: Describing the map without quoting any specific country names or regions, earning no marks. Confusing the type of map (choropleth vs. dot map vs. flow map). Referring to Africa as a country when describing the map distribution — always name specific countries.

Label each key stage of formation clearly. For waterfalls: show hard rock cap, soft rock undercut, plunge pool, and direction of retreat. For wave-cut platforms: show cliff, wave-cut notch, cliff retreat arrow, and rocky shore. Use named erosion processes (hydraulic action, abrasion) at the relevant stage. In 2023, many candidates muddled focus and epicentre, or seismograph and Richter scale. In 2024 and 2025, candidates used the outdated 1995 Kobe earthquake case study or wrote about preparations instead of responses (or vice versa). The question in 2024 required evaluation of preparations before an earthquake, but many described impacts or responses instead.

In 2025, candidates generally did not use case study material to show how globalisation helped a BRICS country.
