What Edexcel examiners say about Economics
Verbatim quotes from 5 official Edexcel examiner reports (2023–2024). Every quote is attributable to a specific paper and session — these are the things Edexcel markers flag year after year.
Underdeveloped chains of reasoning
Your responses will score highly if they show clear evidence of development. Examiners are looking for a 'chain of reasoning'. Make one point per paragraph, apply it to the context of the question, and then explain it carefully, step-by-step.
Drawing diagrams that are unlabelled
When drawing diagrams remember to ensure that they are clear and have correct labels on both axes and lines.
Generic, theory-only answers with no real-world /…
For application, try to picture yourself as an economist advising a particular firm or sector on the impact of a change or policy. Context is crucial because what may work in one industry may not apply to another.
Most Common Mistakes — Economics

Underdeveloped chains of reasoning — stating points without 'Because, Leads to, Therefore' steps

Drawing diagrams that are unlabelled, mislabelled, or never integrated into the written analysis

Generic, theory-only answers with no real-world / extract context (Application marks lost)
9EC0 Paper 1, 9EC0 Paper 2, 9EC0 Paper 3 · Mentioned in all five readable ERs
Missing or weak evaluation, particularly on the 8-mark 'examine' questions
9EC0 Paper 1, 9EC0 Paper 2, 9EC0 Paper 3 · Most-frequently flagged mark loss across all five ERs

Topics Students Struggle With Most
Contestability vs competitiveness (Theme 3)
Q8 on the 2024 Paper 1 was 'altogether less popular and the quality of responses more varied than Q7'. Examiners noted: 'Competitiveness is about the extent of actual competition in an industry, whereas contestability is about the threat of potential competition becoming actual. Many candidates wrote responses about the extent of actual competition in the industry and confused this with potential competition.' (9EC0 Paper 1, June 2024)
9EC0 Paper 1
Price elasticity values — interpreting magnitude correctly
On 9EC0 Paper 1 2024 Q1(a), 'Some candidates also thought the value of –0.7 is more inelastic than –0.4, which it isn't.' Candidates also confused 'less inelastic' with 'more elastic'. (9EC0 Paper 1, June 2024)
9EC0 Paper 1
Multiplier formula and units
On 9EC0 Paper 2 2024 Q4(b): '1/mpc and 1/(mpc-1) are common errors. Missing units (millions) 3 out of 4'. Many candidates also returned percentage answers when the question asked for an absolute change. (9EC0 Paper 2, June 2024)
9EC0 Paper 2
Progressive vs regressive tax — rates not levels
On 9EC0 Paper 2 2024 Q6(a): 'The most important thing about this question is that progressive tax means the RATE rises as income or wealth rises, not just that it rises.' Candidates who said the level of tax rises (rather than the rate) were capped on application marks. (9EC0 Paper 2, June 2024)
9EC0 Paper 2
House-price effects on the macroeconomy (wealth effect)
On 9EC0 Paper 3 2023 Q2(d): 'This question on house prices falling caused some significant problems. Mean at 14.1 is the lowest any essay has had in the whole specification series. The average mean is 16 to 17.' Candidates incorrectly assumed falling house prices means more people buy houses, when 'the wealth effect is the most important factor'. (9EC0 Paper 3, June 2023)
9EC0 Paper 3
Labour shortages vs unemployment
On 9EC0 Paper 3 2023 Q2(e): 'A significant number misunderstood labour shortages as meaning unemployment. In this context it was rare for the answers to access many marks. Hence the standard deviation reached a high of 6.79 which is far higher than ever seen on a 25 mark question in this series.' (9EC0 Paper 3, June 2023)
9EC0 Paper 3
Absolute vs comparative advantage / globalisation factors
On 9EC0 Paper 2 2024 Q8: 'There was a persistent confusion over absolute and comparative advantage. We marked positively throughout but it would be advised to make sure that the diagrams and explanations fit precisely.' Many also evaluated whether globalisation was 'good' rather than evaluating the factors causing it. (9EC0 Paper 2, June 2024)
9EC0 Paper 2
Price discrimination diagrams (two-market)
On 9EC0 Paper 1 2023 Q6(e): candidates required a diagram and 'There was some confusion between price discrimination and product differentiation, so candidates are reminded that price discrimination is charging different prices for the same product to different groups of consumers.' Many used revenue rather than profit, and several drew whole-market plus sub-market diagrams when 'the simple 2 sub-market diagram was quite adequate'. (9EC0 Paper 1, June 2023)
