What Are Assessment Objectives (AOs)?

How is Edexcel A Level Physical Education (9PE0) assessed?

9PE0 has four components. Component 1 (9PE0/01) is a 2-hour-30-minute written paper worth 140 marks (40% of the qualification) assessing scientific and biomechanical principles: anatomy and physiology, energy systems, biomechanics and exercise physiology. Component 2 (9PE0/02) is a 2-hour written paper worth 100 marks (30%) assessing psychological and social principles: skill acquisition, sport psychology, socio-cultural studies and sport history. Component 3 (9PE0/03) is the NEA Practical Performance, 40 marks, 15% — one chosen physical activity in the role of player/performer or coach, centre-assessed and externally moderated. How do the Component 3 Practical Performance and Component 4 Investigation NEA components work?

Component 3 assesses candidates as a player or performer in one or two activities from Pearson's approved list. Centres record performance evidence in a competitive or high-demand environment and assess candidates against Pearson's activity-specific criteria; Pearson then externally moderates the marks. Component 4 is a written investigation in which the candidate analyses a performance (their own or a peer's), identifies strengths and weaknesses using specification knowledge, and designs a justified training programme. Both NEA components are marked by the centre teacher and moderated by Pearson. Centres must follow the 9PE0 NEA guidelines precisely; evidence that does not meet the specified requirements cannot be rewarded.

How are the scientific (Component 1) and psychological (Component 2) papers different in mark scheme expectations?

Component 1 (Scientific Principles) uses shorter structured questions that reward precise AO1 recall (definitions, equations, diagrams), AO2 application to sport, and data/quantitative skills including graphing and calculation with correct units. Component 2 (Psychological and Social Principles) uses a wider variety of command words and includes four extended levels-based questions (some asterisked) that assess AO3 analysis and evaluation. The June 2023 examiners noted that Component 2 demanded 'higher-order thinking skills' in extended questions and that responses needed structured introductions, discrete paragraphs and substantiated conclusions to access the higher mark bands.

Are formula sheets or data tables provided in the 9PE0 written papers?

No formula sheet is provided for 9PE0. Candidates must memorise key equations (e.g. power = strength × speed, velocity = displacement / time, angular momentum = moment of inertia × angular velocity) and the correct units for physiological and biomechanical variables. A data table may be provided within a specific question if the question requires data interpretation, but candidates must copy the exact unit format from that table in their answer. The June 2023 Paper 1 examiner specifically noted that the correct unit for velocity is m.s⁻¹, not m/s, and that this distinction was given in the question's data table.
