AO stands for Assessment Objective. Think of AOs as the different “skills” Edexcel tests you on in every single question. When an examiner marks your paper, they don't just give you a mark out of 12 based on how “good” your answer feels — they allocate specific marks to each AO separately.

For example, a 12-mark question might be split as: AO1 (2 marks) + AO2 (2 marks) + AO3 (2 marks) + AO4 (6 marks). If you write a perfect textbook answer but don't evaluate, you can only score 6 out of 12 — because the other 6 marks are specifically reserved for evaluation.

Each command word in GCSE Biology 1BI0 is a scoring instruction. Understanding what Edexcel examiners expect is critical to earning full marks.

State what happens. If a graph is provided, read and quote specific data values. If describing a trend, state whether it increases, decreases, or stays the same, and when any change occurs.

Common mistake

Giving a biological reason (explaining) instead of stating what happens. The question says 'describe the trend' — give figures from the graph, not 'because photosynthesis needs light'.

explain2–6 marks

Give the biological reason or mechanism. Start with the observation, then add 'because' or 'which means' to introduce the cause.

Common mistake

Restating the observation without a reason — examiners call this 'only describing'. Use the word 'because' as a prompt to add the explanation. Also avoid repeating information already given in the question stem.

Show the formula, substitute numbers, and write the answer with correct units. Re-read the question to check the required format (decimal places, significant figures, nearest whole number).

Common mistake

Writing too much and accidentally introducing an incorrect statement that cancels the correct one. If only one mark is available, give only one answer — the list rule means a right and a wrong response cancel each other out.

Identify both a similarity and a difference between the two things. Use comparative language: 'faster', 'higher', 'larger'.

Common mistake

Giving the reverse argument for the same point as two separate answers (e.g. 'A is higher' and 'B is lower' — these are the same point and only earn one mark). Each mark requires a genuinely different observation.

Incorrect diagrams in GCSE Biology 1BI0 are flagged in every Edexcel examiner report. Use this checklist before every practice and in the exam.

Cell drawings from microscope images (Core Practical, Paper 1 and 2)

Draw the outline of the cell you can SEE in the image — do not draw a textbook cell. Use a sharp pencil with thin, continuous, unbroken lines. Draw to scale. Label only what the question asks (one label is safer than two — a right and wrong label cancel each other).

Common error: Drawing a stylised sperm or animal cell when the question specifies a bacterial cell. Adding organelles (e.g. mitochondria) that are not visible in the image. Labelling more structures than asked — an incorrect second label cancels the correct first one.

Punnett squares for genetic inheritance (Paper 1)

Use only the allele letters given in the question. Show parental genotypes, write gametes along the top and side, fill all four boxes, then state offspring genotypes and phenotypes. For sex-linked inheritance, show the allele on the X chromosome notation.

Common error: Using different allele letters from those specified in the question (no marks if letters differ). Not showing phenotypes for offspring. In sex-linkage, placing alleles on the Y chromosome or omitting the sex chromosome notation entirely.

Graphs — plotting and lines of best fit (Paper 2)

Axes: Independent variable (with units) × Dependent variable (with units)

Label both axes with the variable name and units. Plot points accurately. Draw a smooth curve or straight line of best fit through the data — do not join each point with straight line segments. For trend lines: roughly equal numbers of points above and below the line.

Common error: Drawing a line that does not reflect the trend (vertical, horizontal, or oblique lines through scattered data). Extending a line in the wrong direction. Not labelling axes with units.

Pyramid of biomass (Paper 2H)

Draw bars of proportional width, not a triangle. The lowest bar (producer) must be the widest; each subsequent bar must be 50% or less of the bar below it. Label each bar with the correct organism from bottom (producer) to top (top consumer).

Common error: Drawing a triangle instead of stacked bars — this scores zero for proportions but may still earn the labelling mark. Drawing bars where a higher consumer is wider than the organism below. Labelling organisms in the wrong order.

Food webs and food chains (Paper 2)

Arrows always point FROM the organism being eaten TO the organism doing the eating (direction of energy transfer). Start chains with the producer. When analysing food webs, trace each feeding relationship carefully before stating consequences of removing an organism.

Common error: Reversing the arrows (pointing from consumer to prey). Misreading the food web and stating that prey eat predators. Not following all feeding relationships when asked about the effect of removing one species.
