What Are Assessment Objectives (AOs)?

Before we dive in, you need to understand how Edexcel actually marks your answers.

AO stands for Assessment Objective. Think of AOs as the different “skills” Edexcel tests you on in every single question. When an examiner marks your paper, they don't just give you a mark out of 12 based on how “good” your answer feels — they allocate specific marks to each AO separately.

For example, a 12-mark question might be split as: AO1 (2 marks) + AO2 (2 marks) + AO3 (2 marks) + AO4 (6 marks). If you write a perfect textbook answer but don't evaluate, you can only score 6 out of 12 — because the other 6 marks are specifically reserved for evaluation.

Before writing an example, ask yourself: would an examiner reading only my example know exactly what I mean? If the movement or context is ambiguous, add one more phrase to clarify it.

'Stress relief' and 'reduced anxiety' are the same emotional health benefit — only one mark. How to fix this

For every 'explain' question, follow a three-part chain: FACT → APPLICATION → IMPACT. State the fact (plasma carries red blood cells), apply it to the sport context (which carry oxygen to muscles), then state the impact (so the runner can sustain aerobic energy production and delay fatigue). If only the fact is given, one mark at most. If fact + application are given but impact is missing, two marks at most. Adding the impact phrase — and ensuring it refers to intensity, not just 'works longer' — is what earns the third or fourth mark.

Learn a clear list for each body system's long-term training adaptations. Muscular system: muscular hypertrophy, increased myoglobin, more mitochondria, greater capillary density around muscle fibres, increased tolerance of lactic acid. Skeletal system: increased bone density, stronger tendons and ligaments, increased synovial fluid production, thicker articular cartilage. Cardiovascular system: cardiac hypertrophy, increased stroke volume, lower resting heart rate. Respiratory system: increased vital capacity, stronger respiratory muscles. If the question names a specific system, every point in your answer must belong to that system only.

Learn the three terms precisely. Sportsmanship: following the rules, playing fairly, respecting opponents (e.g. shaking hands, accepting referee decisions). Gamesmanship: bending the rules to gain an unfair advantage without technically breaking them (e.g. time-wasting, sledging, feigning injury). Deviance: breaking the rules deliberately — against the law or sporting rules (e.g. blood doping, match-fixing, deliberate violent foul). A question asking for a definition cannot be answered with only an example — state the definition first, then add an example to confirm your understanding.

Identify the class of lever → Name the effort, load and fulcrum → For mechanical advantage questions: state that the effort arm is longer than the resistance arm → State the advantage (large load moved with relatively little effort)

  • First-class lever: fulcrum between effort and load (e.g. neck in heading a ball at the atlanto-occipital joint)
  • Second-class lever: load between fulcrum and effort — mechanical advantage (e.g. calf raise, push-off at the ankle)

Each command word in GCSE Physical Education 1PE0 is a scoring instruction. Understanding what Edexcel examiners expect is critical to earning full marks.

describe1–2 marks

State what happens or what the feature is. If given data, quote specific values. If describing a procedure, give the steps in order. No biological reason or cause is required.

Common mistake

Adding an explanation (a 'because' clause) when none was asked for. For procedure questions, being too vague — e.g. 'grip the equipment' with no mention of how hard or any other specific step. Give as many descriptive points as there are marks available.

explain2–4 marks

Give the reason or mechanism. A developed response is required — state the fact, then follow it through to a consequence for the performer. Use connectives like 'which means', 'so that', 'therefore' to trigger the causal chain.

Common mistake

Stating only the first half of the explanation without the consequence. For example, 'plasma carries red blood cells' (one mark) with no link to oxygen transport or aerobic respiration (zero for the rest). Every mark beyond the first requires an additional linked development — do not leave the chain unfinished.

justify2–3 marks

Give a reason for a decision or judgment and support it with evidence from the data or context provided. State your position, reference specific figures from tables or graphs, and link these to your conclusion.

Common mistake

Making a general claim without using the data given. Examiners flagged repeatedly that candidates who did not quote specific values from tables could not access the mark for justification. Treat data in the question as compulsory evidence, not optional background.

evaluate3–9 marks

Make a judgment about the value, effectiveness or suitability of something, and support it with evidence. Cover both advantages and disadvantages where appropriate, and reach a conclusion about the overall effectiveness.

Common mistake

Producing only AO1 (factual) statements without applying them to the scenario or drawing a conclusion. For 9-mark questions, lists of facts score Level 1 only. Every factual point must be applied to the named performer and then evaluated with a specific impact statement to reach Level 3.

Give a concise, correct answer — usually one or two words or a single sentence. No elaboration required.

Common mistake

Writing too much and accidentally including an incorrect term that cancels the correct one (list rule). For one-mark 'state' questions, give exactly one answer. Writing two correct-sounding but contradictory points can lose the mark.

define1 mark

Give the meaning of the term. A definition is a general statement of what the term means — not an example of it.

Common mistake

Providing only an example instead of a definition. For example, writing 'shaking hands after a match' for sportsmanship gains zero; 'playing by the rules and showing respect for opponents and officials' gains the mark. An example can support a definition but cannot replace it.

Name or select the correct item from the information provided. Usually requires a single named term, body part, skill type, or data value.

Common mistake

Naming the bone type rather than the bone name when asked to identify the bone, or vice versa. Read table headings carefully — if the question asks for the name of the bone, write 'femur', not 'long bone'. If it asks for the bone type, write 'long bone', not 'femur'.

suggest1–2 marks

Apply your knowledge to produce a plausible answer for an unfamiliar or open-ended scenario. The answer must be biologically or physiologically reasonable and must fit the specific context described.

Common mistake

Giving a generic answer that ignores the context. Read the scenario carefully — the question usually contains clues that steer the expected answer. For fitness testing questions, make sure the test and the component you name align: the Harvard step test measures cardiovascular endurance, not muscular endurance.

Label both muscles of the antagonistic pair. Mark which is the agonist (contracting — usually shown shorter) and which is the antagonist (relaxing — usually shown elongated). Label the joint and state the joint action using precise terminology (flexion, extension, plantar flexion, dorsiflexion, abduction, adduction).

Common error: Labelling only one muscle of the pair. Using 'flexes' or 'extends' to describe the muscle action instead of 'contracts' or 'relaxes'. Reversing the agonist and antagonist roles — always identify the agonist as the prime mover that is shortening to produce the movement shown.

Lever system diagram (three classes)

Mark the three components: Fulcrum (triangle symbol at pivot point), Effort (force applied by the muscle) and Load (resistance or weight being moved). Indicate the effort arm (distance from fulcrum to effort) and resistance arm (distance from fulcrum to load). For second-class levers, show that the effort arm is longer, explaining the mechanical advantage.

Common error: Drawing the fulcrum symbol without labelling it. Placing the fulcrum, effort and load in the wrong positions for the lever class. Stating the load when the question asks for the missing component — if the load is already labelled in the diagram, naming it again gains zero marks.

Skills continuum (open–closed) placement diagram

Axes: Open (unpredictable/unstable environment) ←→ Closed (predictable/stable environment) × N/A

Place the named skill at the appropriate point on the continuum. Open skills are performed in unpredictable, externally paced environments; closed skills are performed in predictable, self-paced environments. Many sport skills sit towards one end but not at the extreme — justify the position with an example of what makes it partially open AND partially closed.

Common error: Confusing open/closed skills with basic/complex skills or high/low organisation skills — these are different continua. Placing a skill at the extreme open end when it has regular or predictable elements. Justifying placement with only one side of the continuum — examiners require examples of both the open and closed characteristics to award full marks.

Energy balance equation diagram

Show Energy In (calories/food consumed) on one side and Energy Out (calories burned/expended) on the other. Indicate the three possible outcomes: Energy In = Energy Out → weight maintained; Energy In > Energy Out → weight gain; Energy In < Energy Out → weight loss. Always link the outcome to the specific sporting context in the question (e.g. too heavy for weight category in boxing, too light to compete).

Common error: Stating only 'energy in = energy out' without specifying the consequences of imbalance. Failing to link the imbalance to the specific performance context — examiners award the final marks only when candidates apply the equation to the scenario named in the question.

Bar chart / data table interpretation (Component 2 data questions)

Axes: Variable (e.g. season, player, age group) × Value (e.g. revenue in millions, performance statistic)

Read the axes and column headings before answering. For trend questions, identify whether the trend is consistently up, consistently down, or variable (with a named exception). For comparison questions, identify which data points are higher AND which are lower — state both where required. Quote specific values to justify answers.

Common error: Predicting a trend without reference to the data pattern shown. Identifying a strength as a weakness or vice versa when reading a multi-column performance table. Not quoting figures — 'it was higher' is not sufficient; 'it increased from 95 to 105 million' earns the mark.

The most frequently cited error across Component 1 reports. Candidates said muscles 'flex' or 'extend', used 'bend' instead of 'flex', or said the agonist was contracting because it was relaxing. Most candidates knew protein aids growth and repair but the question required specifically timed intake (within 1–2 hours post-exercise), the mechanism of protein synthesis, and the specific outcome of repairing microtears. Socio-cultural influences — distinguishing personal factors from barriers to participation

Candidates listed 'money', 'wealth', 'availability' and 'accessibility' when asked for personal factors; only 'socio-economic' (the specification term) was credited. Repeating factors already given in the question (disability, ethnicity) also cost marks. Examiners flagged this in both 2023 and 2024 Component 2 reports.

Lever systems — providing insufficient specificity in examples and confusing lever classes

Candidates named a sport (cycling, high jump) without specifying the moment in the movement where the lever operates, and were credited zero. First-class levers (e.g. heading the ball) were less well known than third-class levers. Drawing the recognised fulcrum symbol without a written label was also not credited.

Principles of training — applying specificity and progressive overload with concrete examples

Candidates defined principles correctly but lost the second mark by failing to give a specific example. A correct example required a number: 'increase the reps' alone earned one mark; 'increase from 10 to 20 reps' earned both. Responses about specificity focused on duration rather than intensity, which was not credited when the training goal was strength.

Types of feedback — distinguishing concurrent, terminal and intrinsic; not confusing with types of guidance

Multiple candidates answered the 9-mark feedback question using types of guidance (visual, verbal, manual, mechanical) instead of types of feedback. Intrinsic feedback was only credited as an AO1 statement; further application was not relevant to the coach-centred scenario. Concurrent feedback's unsuitability for the trampolinist (too quick, potentially distracting/dangerous) was rarely fully articulated.

How does the NEA practical performance component work, and how is it weighted?

Component 3 (Practical Performance, 1PE0/03) is the Non-Examined Assessment worth 30% of the GCSE (105 marks, 35 marks per activity). Candidates are assessed performing three physical activities selected from the activity list in the specification — at least one must be a team sport and at least one must be an individual sport (the third can be either). Marks are awarded for performance quality in each activity. Component 3 is marked by the teacher and moderated by Pearson. The separate written analysis and evaluation of performance is the Personal Exercise Programme (Component 4, 1PE0/04, 10% — 20 marks) — a six- to eight-week PEP plan and evaluation. Together Components 3 + 4 carry the AO4 weighting (40%) of the qualification.

What sport-specific examples are required in the written exams?

Both written papers regularly ask candidates to apply knowledge to scenarios using specific named sports or performers from the Component 3 activity list. When giving examples, candidates must name the sport AND specify the exact movement, moment or phase — simply naming the sport earns zero marks. For example, 'at take-off in high jump' scores marks for a second-class lever question; 'high jump' alone does not. For skill classification and practice structure questions, name a specific skill (e.g. 'forehand volley in tennis') rather than just the sport. Use your own practical experience as a reference point — examiners encourage this.

What is the difference between Component 1 and Component 2 in 1PE0?

Component 1 (Fitness and Body Systems) covers the biological side of PE: skeletal and muscular anatomy, movement analysis (joints, muscle pairs, lever systems), the cardiovascular and respiratory systems during exercise, and physical training principles. Component 2 (Health and Performance) covers the social and psychological side: health, fitness and well-being, diet and energy balance, sport psychology (motivation, feedback, guidance, skill classification, practice structures, goal setting) and socio-cultural influences (participation, commercialisation, sportsmanship, ethics and drugs). Both papers use the same three sections (multiple-choice, short-answer, extended response) and the same three assessment objectives (AO1, AO2, AO3). Revision for each component requires learning distinct content areas, but the exam technique — using technical language, following points through to impact, applying to the named context — is identical across both.
