AO stands for Assessment Objective. Think of AOs as the different “skills” Edexcel tests you on in every single question. When an examiner marks your paper, they don't just give you a mark out of 12 based on how “good” your answer feels — they allocate specific marks to each AO separately.

For example, a 12-mark question might be split as: AO1 (2 marks) + AO2 (2 marks) + AO3 (2 marks) + AO4 (6 marks). If you write a perfect textbook answer but don't evaluate, you can only score 6 out of 12 — because the other 6 marks are specifically reserved for evaluation.

A CONTROL is a separate set-up where the independent variable is absent (e.g. water instead of enzyme solution) — used FOR COMPARISON. A CONTROLLED VARIABLE is something kept constant across all set-ups (e.g. temperature, pH, volume). When asked for a control, name a substance/set-up; when asked for controlled variables, list factors held constant. Never list the dependent variable as something to control — if pH is being measured, it cannot also be controlled.

Structure

State Independent Variable (with values), Dependent Variable (and how measured), Controlled Variables (named factors), Method (sample size, repeats, equipment), Analysis (mean, SD, graph, statistical test).

  • Independent variable: list 5 specific values (e.g. 5, 15, 20, 25, 30°C)
  • Dependent variable: name what you measure AND how (e.g. time for DCPIP to decolourise, measured with stopwatch / colorimeter)
  • Controlled variables: list named factors — same volume, same mass, same age of organism, same buffer pH

Two clearly-labelled halves: Similarities (using 'both have…') and Differences (using 'X has…, whereas Y has…'). Always include at least one of each.

  • Write 'Similarities:' as a heading, then list — never give two separate descriptions
  • Use comparative connectors in every sentence: 'both', 'whereas', 'unlike', 'in contrast'
  • Quantify differences where possible: 'tRNA has a clover-leaf shape, whereas mRNA is a straight chain'
  • Use the marks allocated as a guide — a 3-mark question wants 3 distinct comparative points
  • If comparing structures, focus on STRUCTURE features, not function (a common error in WBI13)

In any investigation, whether it be experimental or observational, it is important to follow the rules laid down by science. You need to think about sample size, precisely what you are going to measure, what you are going to do in order to make results comparable to each other, and then how the data you have gathered might be analysed.

evaluate3–4 marks

Make a judgement on the usefulness or validity of data/method, AND give reasons. Must explain WHY each problem matters.

Common mistake

Listing problems without explaining why they make the data less useful, OR commenting on the data instead of evaluating its usefulness.

If a command word has never appeared before on a past paper, or only appeared rarely, you should still be prepared for its appearance on the paper that you sit. So the very important suggestion is to make yourself familiar with all the command words and how they should be interpreted.

Show the O atom in the bond linking two monosaccharides. Show H₂O released. Number the carbons (e.g. C1 of glucose, C2 of fructose).

Common error: Not putting the 'O' in the bond, joining up the wrong carbons, adding extra atoms, or missing the H off C5. The commonest error is to omit the H off C5.

Myelinated motor neurone with two labels

Draw cell body (with dendrites), axon with myelin sheath sections, nodes of Ranvier, and motor end plate. Label any TWO required structures clearly.

Common error: Drawing a sensory or relay neurone instead of motor; not labelling the myelin sheath or nodes of Ranvier; vague labels like 'long part' instead of axon.

Punnett square / genetic cross for sex-linked inheritance

Axes: Paternal gametes (X^H, Y for haemophilia) × Maternal gametes (X^H, X^h)

Use capital and lowercase letters for dominant/recessive alleles, with the X chromosome carrying the allele written as a superscript (e.g. X^H X^h). Show ALL four offspring genotypes and label phenotypes.

Common error: Confusing 'allele' and 'gene' in the explanation; placing the allele on the Y chromosome; saying females can only be carriers when in fact two recessive alleles can produce an affected female.

Axes: Categorical variable (e.g. species, treatment group) × Quantitative variable with units (e.g. % loss in mass, mutation rate)

Draw vertical bars of equal width with gaps between them. Add error bars showing standard deviation or range. Comment on overlap: non-overlapping bars indicate a significant difference; overlapping bars do not.

Which units count toward AS vs A2, and how does that affect my final IAL Biology grade?

WBI11, WBI12 and WBI13 are IAS-level units (sat at the end of Year 1) and together account for 50% of the full IAL grade (300 of 600 UMS). WBI14, WBI15 and WBI16 are IA2 units (Year 2) and contribute the other 50%. The four theory units (1, 2, 4, 5) carry 120 UMS each; the two practical units (3, 6) carry 60 UMS each — so the practical units are worth half as much per unit as the theory units in the final grade, even though students often underestimate them. If you cash in your IAS at the end of Year 1, those marks lock in toward your final IAL grade unless you re-sit; IA2 units are typically only sat once at the end of Year 2.
