About IB Mathematics Applications and Interpretation
IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) is designed for students who are interested in developing mathematics for describing our world and applying it to real-world contexts. It emphasises the use of technology and statistical analysis. Topics include number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus (with a lighter calculus focus than AA).
IB Maths AI is available at SL and HL. AI SL is often chosen by students who need to meet the IB mathematics requirement without pursuing pure mathematics. AI HL is a rigorous course suited for students heading into economics, business, or social sciences at university. Our archive includes question papers and mark schemes from the current AI syllabus (first examined 2021).
Exam Format
Paper 1 (SL: 1 hr 30 min / HL: 2 hr)
GDC required. Short-answer questions covering core topics.
Paper 2 (SL: 1 hr 30 min / HL: 2 hr)
GDC required. Extended-response questions with real-world modelling contexts.
Paper 3 (HL only: 1 hr)
Two extended-response questions involving mathematical modelling and investigation. GDC required.
SL vs HL
AI SL focuses on applied statistics and foundational calculus. AI HL extends into linear algebra, Voronoi diagrams, bivariate data, and deeper modelling. AI HL Paper 3 involves open-ended mathematical modelling, similar to AA HL Paper 3 in format but more applied.
Study Tips for IB Mathematics Applications and Interpretation
- ✓A GDC is allowed in all AI papers — learn all statistical functions on your calculator thoroughly.
- ✓Practise setting up regression models and interpreting r and r² values.
- ✓Understand Normal distribution, chi-squared tests, and t-tests — these appear in every AI exam.
- ✓For Paper 3, read the problem carefully and identify what type of model is being used before diving in.
- ✓Show all working even when the GDC gives the answer directly; presentation marks count.
- ✓Focus on financial mathematics (compound interest, annuities, amortisation) — frequently tested.
Questions, answered.
AI SL is generally considered less demanding than AA SL or HL. AI HL is comparable in difficulty to AA SL. The difference is focus: AI uses technology and real-world application; AA focuses on pure mathematical argument.
It depends on the university. Most UK and US universities accept AI HL for sciences, but some top programmes require AA HL. Always check specific entry requirements.
All three AI papers require a GDC. A calculator with statistical functions (e.g. TI-84 Plus CE, Casio fx-CG50) is needed.
