About IB Environmental Systems and Societies
IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) is unique in the IB Diploma as it is an interdisciplinary subject that can count as either a Group 3 (Individuals and Societies) or Group 4 (Sciences) subject, or both simultaneously — allowing students to save a subject slot. It covers ecosystems, biodiversity, atmospheric systems, aquatic and terrestrial systems, soil systems, climate change, human populations, pollution management, and conservation.
ESS is offered at SL only and is one of the few IB subjects with no HL option. The subject combines scientific methodology with societal analysis and is assessed through two written papers and an Internal Assessment.
Exam Format
Paper 1 (1 hr)
Case study paper with short-answer and structured questions based on pre-seen material released before the exam.
Paper 2 (2 hr)
Section A: short structured questions on core syllabus topics. Section B: extended-response essay questions.
SL vs HL
ESS is SL only — there is no HL option. It can count as both a Group 3 and Group 4 subject simultaneously, making it a strategic choice for students wanting to free up a subject slot.
