What Are Assessment Objectives (AOs)?

Before we dive in, you need to understand how AQA actually marks your answers.

AO stands for Assessment Objective. Think of AOs as the different “skills” AQA tests you on in every single question. When an examiner marks your paper, they don't just give you a mark out of 12 based on how “good” your answer feels — they allocate specific marks to each AO separately.

For example, a 12-mark question might be split as: AO1 (2 marks) + AO2 (2 marks) + AO3 (2 marks) + AO4 (6 marks). If you write a perfect textbook answer but don't evaluate, you can only score 6 out of 12 — because the other 6 marks are specifically reserved for evaluation.

How to fix this

On x.3 questions, the resource is a prompt, not the answer. Spend 30 seconds identifying the geographical concept the resource hints at (e.g. carbon sequestration, sustainability, place meaning) then write what you KNOW about that concept and link it to one or two specific things in the resource. Never just describe the figure.

Plan three argument paragraphs and a counter, and make sure the conclusion gives a quantified verdict ('largely', 'partially', 'only at local scale') with the strongest evidence behind it.

Three components: Paper 1 (7037/1) Physical Geography — 120 marks, 2h 30m; Paper 2 (7037/2) Human Geography — 120 marks, 2h 30m; Paper 3 (7037/C) Geographical fieldwork investigation — a 60-mark non-exam coursework report of around 3,000–4,000 words, internally marked and externally moderated.

Is the NEA (Paper 3) sat as an exam, and how is it different from Papers 1 and 2?

No — Paper 3 is a Non-Exam Assessment. Students design and carry out their own fieldwork investigation, then submit a written report. There is no time-limited exam component for Paper 3. Centres mark the report against four areas (purpose, methodology, data analysis, conclusions/evaluation) and AQA externally moderates a sample.

Which optional units do most centres choose, and does my choice affect my mark?

On Paper 1 Section B, Coasts is overwhelmingly the most popular, Glaciation is moderate, Hot Deserts has very small uptake. On Section C almost all centres opt for Hazards over Ecosystems.
