About OCR A Level
OCR A Level (Advanced Level) qualifications are studied over two years in Year 12 and Year 13, providing in-depth subject knowledge for university entrance. OCR A Level specification codes begin with H, with lower codes for AS Level and higher codes for the full A Level (e.g., H020 for AS Biology A, H420 for A Level Biology A).
OCR A Levels are graded A* to E (A* being the highest). Unlike GCSE, A Levels do not have Foundation/Higher tiers — all students sit the same papers. OCR is particularly strong in sciences, offering both OCR A and OCR B variants that provide different approaches to the same subject content.
OCR A Level exams are held in May and June, with results released in August. Specimen papers and sample assessment materials (SAMs) from OCR show the exact format, question styles, and mark allocation that students will encounter in the real exam — making them essential revision resources.

AS Level covers Year 12 content only and is graded A-E. A Level covers both Year 12 and Year 13 content, graded A*-E. OCR uses lower H codes for AS (e.g., H020) and higher H codes for A Level (e.g., H420). AS Level results no longer count towards the A Level grade.
OCR A Level specification codes begin with H. Lower numbers (e.g., H020, H032) are AS Level, while higher numbers (e.g., H420, H432) are the full A Level. For example, H020 is AS Biology A and H420 is A Level Biology A.
Start with the specimen papers or most recent SAMs, as these show the current exam format. Attempt each paper under timed conditions without notes. Use the mark scheme afterwards to self-assess — note exactly where marks were lost and why. Focus revision on weak topics, then repeat with another paper. For OCR, pay close attention to command words like ‘evaluate’, ‘analyse’, and ‘explain’ as they indicate the depth of response expected.
