What AQA examiners say about Business
Verbatim quotes from 4 official AQA examiner reports (2022–2023). Every quote is attributable to a specific paper and session — these are the things AQA markers flag year after year.
Generic, descriptive answers that ignore the case-study…
such responses were often generic and descriptive, making very limited use of the context.
Listing many undeveloped points instead of one fully…
generally made too many undeveloped points, sacrificing depth.
Weak or repetitive judgements on 9- and 12-mark questions
supported judgement was often lacking. Too often, conclusions simply repeated the previous points made and/or did not make a clear judgement.

Topics Students Struggle With Most
Just-In-Time (JIT) and stock control
Many answers talked about issues with suppliers without clearly linking why this matters more when no stock is held; understanding of the JIT term itself was often weak.
Paper 1
Total Quality Management (TQM) vs quality control
Several students confused TQM with quality control, and many drifted into marketing or reputation effects rather than impact on production.
Paper 1
Job analysis vs job description vs person specification
More than half of responses lost marks because they treated job analysis as an external document available to applicants and could not distinguish it from the job description.
Paper 1
ARR (Average Rate of Return) calculation
Students either knew the ARR formula and got full marks, or scored zero. Common errors included subtracting equipment cost from additional profit and forgetting to multiply by 100.
Paper 2
Net profit margin and gross profit margin
Many students did not understand the difference between gross and net profit, and some answered with the absolute figure (£810) instead of converting to a margin.
Paper 2
Sources of finance — bank loan, overdraft, retained profit
Generic answers dominated; students misunderstood that fixed instalment loans are not affected by interest rate changes, and several thought rising interest rates would save the business money on an overdraft.
Paper 2
Current assets and fixed assets
A very high number of students could not identify a current asset, defaulting to buildings, equipment or machinery instead of cash or stock.
Paper 2
Diseconomies of scale and economies of scale
Less than a quarter of students correctly identified a diseconomy of scale; others gave a definition rather than a reason or left the question blank.

AQA GCSE Business is graded 9–1, where 9 is the highest grade. Grade 4 is a standard pass and grade 5 is a strong pass. AQA is the UK's largest exam board by entries, so Business papers are widely used in schools across England and Wales.
Some AQA GCSE subjects are tiered. Foundation tier (papers ending in F) targets grades 5–1 and covers core content. Higher tier (papers ending in H) targets grades 9–4 and includes more demanding material. Always practise with papers from the tier you are entered for — the question styles, mark allocation, and time limits differ between tiers.
AQA mark schemes use a clear notation: M marks are for method (your working), A marks are for accuracy (correct answer), and B marks are awarded independently. Understanding this system helps you maximise marks even when you don't reach the final answer — showing clear working can earn method marks. After attempting each Business past paper under timed conditions, mark it against the official scheme and categorise every dropped mark as a knowledge gap, method error, or misread question. Target your remaining revision at the category where you lose the most marks.

We have 32 papers across 6 exam sessions for AQA GCSE Business (8132). This includes question papers and mark schemes for both Foundation and Higher tiers, plus 2 specimen papers.
Practise with the tier you are entered for. Foundation tier (8132 papers ending in F) targets grades 5-1. Higher tier (papers ending in H) targets grades 9-4. If you're unsure, ask your teacher which tier you are entered for. Practising with the wrong tier will not prepare you for the correct question style and difficulty.
AQA filenames follow the pattern AQA-[CODE]-[TYPE]-[SESSION]. For example, AQA-81321H-QP-JUN19 means: specification 8132, Paper 1, Higher tier, Question Paper, June 2019. QP = Question Paper, W-MS = Mark Scheme, INS = Insert, SQP = Specimen Question Paper.
