What AQA examiners say about Physical Education

Verbatim quotes from 4 official AQA examiner reports (2022–2023). Every quote is attributable to a specific paper and session — these are the things AQA markers flag year after year.

Stating instead of explaining

On too many occasions the students merely stated a response where an explanation was required.

Misinterpreting the command word and answering at the…

Many students again appeared to struggle to interpret the key command words used in the questions, therefore not hitting the correct assessment objective in their responses.

Repeating the same point under a different label

The main issue preventing students gaining full marks, was probably the repetition of the same point.

Topics Students Struggle With Most

Circumduction (movement type)

Examiners noted circumduction was poorly answered: 'most referred to rotation instead of circumduction', and suggested some centres had not taught it despite being on the spec since 2019.

Paper 1

Tidal volume — definition and changes during exercise

Definitions omitted 'one breath' or 'inspired/expired'; explanations of changes during 800m running were poorly answered. 'Students struggle to understand this topic in the specification.'

Paper 1

Isotonic muscle contractions — concentric vs eccentric

'Identifying the type of isotonic muscle contraction was poor. There were many incorrect answers and blank responses. The most popular response was concentric.'

Paper 1

EPOC and oxygen debt — maintained breathing rate

Students stated breathing rate would 'start to increase' rather than recognising 'an elevated breathing rate needs to be maintained to repay oxygen debt'.

Paper 1

1RM testing — methodology and percentages

Only 20% of students gained the mark for stating a percentage of an IRM; many described aerobic/anaerobic training-zone formulas instead. Sets, reps and 'below 70% 1RM' were rarely cited.

Paper 1

Information-processing model (input → decision → output → feedback)

Decision-making was confused with selective attention (input stage); the output stage was rarely explained as muscles receiving messages from the brain to execute the action.

Paper 2

Personality types (introvert/extrovert) and sport choice

Students linked a personality to an activity but failed to explain WHY — and some named the sport without naming the personality at all, so the response could not be credited.

Paper 2

Somatotypes — applying ectomorph/endomorph/mesomorph to athletics events

Students stated characteristics (AO1) without analysing (AO3) why these would help or hinder performance in a named event; ectomorph and endomorph were sometimes confused.

AQA GCSE Physical Education is graded 9–1, where 9 is the highest grade. Grade 4 is a standard pass and grade 5 is a strong pass. AQA is the UK's largest exam board by entries, so Physical Education papers are widely used in schools across England and Wales.

Some AQA GCSE subjects are tiered. Foundation tier (papers ending in F) targets grades 5–1 and covers core content. Higher tier (papers ending in H) targets grades 9–4 and includes more demanding material. Always practise with papers from the tier you are entered for — the question styles, mark allocation, and time limits differ between tiers.

AQA mark schemes use a clear notation: M marks are for method (your working), A marks are for accuracy (correct answer), and B marks are awarded independently. Understanding this system helps you maximise marks even when you don't reach the final answer — showing clear working can earn method marks. After attempting each Physical Education past paper under timed conditions, mark it against the official scheme and categorise every dropped mark as a knowledge gap, method error, or misread question. Target your remaining revision at the category where you lose the most marks.

Practise with the tier you are entered for. Foundation tier (8582 papers ending in F) targets grades 5-1. Higher tier (papers ending in H) targets grades 9-4. If you're unsure, ask your teacher which tier you are entered for. Practising with the wrong tier will not prepare you for the correct question style and difficulty.

AQA filenames follow the pattern AQA-[CODE]-[TYPE]-[SESSION]. For example, AQA-85821H-QP-JUN19 means: specification 8582, Paper 1, Higher tier, Question Paper, June 2019. QP = Question Paper, W-MS = Mark Scheme, INS = Insert, SQP = Specimen Question Paper.
