Students were asked for observations which could be seen, so those which could be heard did not gain credit. Bubbling and fizzing are the same observation; many gave both terms and no other observation so scored only one mark.
Multi-step mole calculations with no working or no unit…
Some students calculated their number of moles incorrectly due to not converting their volume from cm3 to dm3; in this case they often repeated the error, obtaining what looked like a correct answer.
Vague or wrong language about delocalised electrons

Quantitative chemistry — moles, Mr and concentration calculations
On 8462/1H June 2023 Q05.5, intermediate marks were lost because students did not convert cm³ to dm³ before calculating moles of sodium carbonate, and again when calculating concentration. On 8462/1F June 2023 Q02.7, two thirds of students scored zero on a titration calculation because the figures 1000, 4 and 25 were 'manipulated almost at random'.

Required Practical: making a soluble salt by reacting acid with insoluble base/carbonate
8462/1F June 2023 Q11.1: most candidates 'merely mixed the reactants and then heated them in a crystallising basin… missing out the essential steps of starting with the acid, adding the zinc carbonate to it until the zinc carbonate is in excess, and filtering'. Same gap on 8462/1H June 2022 Q04.2, where few knew why excess base is added.

AQA GCSE Chemistry is graded 9–1, where 9 is the highest grade. Grade 4 is a standard pass and grade 5 is a strong pass. AQA is the UK's largest exam board by entries, so Chemistry papers are widely used in schools across England and Wales.
Some AQA GCSE subjects are tiered. Foundation tier (papers ending in F) targets grades 5–1 and covers core content. Higher tier (papers ending in H) targets grades 9–4 and includes more demanding material. Always practise with papers from the tier you are entered for — the question styles, mark allocation, and time limits differ between tiers.
AQA mark schemes use a clear notation: M marks are for method (your working), A marks are for accuracy (correct answer), and B marks are awarded independently. Understanding this system helps you maximise marks even when you don't reach the final answer — showing clear working can earn method marks.
