About IB Malay ab initio
IB Malay ab initio is a Group 2 Language Acquisition subject for students learning Malay as an additional language at the ab initio (beginner) level. Malay is spoken by approximately 290 million in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and Singapore. Malay has a classical literary tradition of court epics, royal chronicles (hikayat), and the distinctive pantun quatrain poetry form. It served as the lingua franca of the Malay Archipelago for centuries and its modern form underpins both Indonesian and Malaysian national literatures.
IB Malay ab initio is designed for students with little or no prior experience in this language. The course progresses from basic communication to managing the five IB prescribed themes by exam. Past papers include Paper 1 (reading comprehension on authentic texts) and Paper 2 (written production in an appropriate text type).
Exam Format
Paper 1 (1 hr 15 min)
Reading comprehension on authentic texts. Multiple-choice, gap-fill, and short-answer questions.
Paper 2 (45 min)
Written production: write one text in an appropriate format (letter, article, blog, speech) on a given topic.
SL vs HL
Ab initio is SL only. It is designed for beginners and has no HL equivalent.
Study Tips for IB Malay ab initio
- ✓Read authentic Malay content — news, blogs, social media — to build vocabulary in the five IB themes.
- ✓Learn the conventions for each text type in Paper 2: letters, emails, articles, speeches, and blog posts all have different formats.
- ✓For Paper 1, read all questions before reading the text so you know what information to focus on.
- ✓Revise verb tenses thoroughly — tense accuracy distinguishes SL from HL performance.
- ✓Build a vocabulary bank organised by the five IB themes rather than alphabetically.
- ✓Practise the Individual Oral — it counts for 25% (SL) or 20% (HL) of the final grade.
