About IB Mandarin ab initio
IB Mandarin ab initio is a Group 2 Language Acquisition subject for students learning Mandarin Chinese as an additional language at the ab initio (beginner) level. Mandarin Chinese is spoken by approximately 1.3 billion in China, Taiwan, Singapore, and the global Chinese diaspora. Chinese B is one of the fastest-growing language subjects in IB schools worldwide. Proficiency in Mandarin is increasingly valuable for careers in business, technology, finance, and international relations.
IB Mandarin ab initio is designed for students with little or no prior experience in this language. The course progresses from basic communication to managing the five IB prescribed themes by exam. Past papers include Paper 1 (reading comprehension on authentic texts) and Paper 2 (written production in an appropriate text type).
Exam Format
Paper 1 (1 hr 15 min)
Reading comprehension on authentic texts. Multiple-choice, gap-fill, and short-answer questions.
Paper 2 (45 min)
Written production: write one text in an appropriate format (letter, article, blog, speech) on a given topic.
SL vs HL
Ab initio is SL only. It is designed for beginners and has no HL equivalent.
Study Tips for IB Mandarin ab initio
- ✓Read authentic Mandarin Chinese content — news, blogs, social media — to build vocabulary in the five IB themes.
- ✓Learn the conventions for each text type in Paper 2: letters, emails, articles, speeches, and blog posts all have different formats.
- ✓For Paper 1, read all questions before reading the text so you know what information to focus on.
- ✓Revise verb tenses thoroughly — tense accuracy distinguishes SL from HL performance.
- ✓Build a vocabulary bank organised by the five IB themes rather than alphabetically.
- ✓Practise the Individual Oral — it counts for 25% (SL) or 20% (HL) of the final grade.
