About

About IB Spanish B

IB Spanish B is a Group 2 language acquisition subject for students who have studied Spanish as an additional language. It covers the five prescribed themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation, and sharing the planet. Spanish B is one of the most widely taken IB subjects globally, reflecting the importance of Spanish as an international language.

Our archive includes IB Spanish B past papers and mark schemes from multiple sessions. Practising Paper 1 reading comprehension and Paper 2 written production under timed conditions is the best preparation for the written exams.

Assessment

Exam Format

Paper 1 (SL: 1 hr 30 min / HL: 2 hr)

Reading comprehension based on authentic Spanish texts. Multiple-choice, gap-fill, and short-answer questions.

Paper 2 (SL: 45 min / HL: 1 hr)

Written production task: choose and write one text type (letter, article, blog post, speech, etc.) on a given topic.

Levels

SL vs HL

HL texts in Paper 1 are more complex and abstract. HL Paper 2 requires longer, more sophisticated written responses. HL students are assessed on idiomatic use of language and register.

Revision

Study Tips for IB Spanish B

  • Read authentic Spanish content: El País, BBC Mundo, or Spanish language social media.
  • Learn the correct conventions for each text type (carta formal, artículo, discurso) in Paper 2.
  • Focus on grammar: ser vs estar, subjunctive, past tenses (preterito/imperfecto) are frequently tested.
  • For reading comprehension, read questions first to identify what information to look for in the text.
  • Expand vocabulary around the five IB themes — these are the topics all questions are based on.
