About IB Mandarin B
IB Mandarin B (also listed as Chinese B Mandarin) is a Group 2 language acquisition subject for students learning Mandarin Chinese as an additional language. It covers the five IB prescribed themes and develops listening, reading, writing, and speaking in Mandarin.
Exam Format
Paper 1 (SL: 1 hr 30 min / HL: 2 hr)
Reading comprehension on authentic Mandarin texts.
Paper 2 (SL: 45 min / HL: 1 hr)
Written production in Mandarin in an appropriate text type.
SL vs HL
HL uses more complex texts and expects more sophisticated written Mandarin.
Study Tips for IB Mandarin B
- ✓Build vocabulary using HSK word lists — the IB themes align well with HSK 4–6 vocabulary.
- ✓Practise writing Chinese characters accurately — marks are deducted for incorrect characters in Paper 2.
- ✓Listen to authentic Mandarin content (podcasts, news) to prepare for the oral component.
